Have you heard the joke about an Australian, an American and a Mongolian who walk into a bar?
We have, only the punch line is (sort of) this website.
MoD (Mother of Diversity) is the brainchild of Daniel, Kurt and Saan, three friends who hail from Australia, America and Mongolia respectively. And yes, in case you’re wondering we did meet in a bar!
Here’s how it went down…
Dan:
I walked down boundary street in West End Brisbane towards a funky little bar called Sling. It was then and still is one of my favourite lounges in Brisbane. I walked in and was a little annoyed that my friends were once again running late. On the off chance they were in the backroom I headed down the narrow passage past the kitchen to the rear of the bar.
That night, Mother of Diversity was born.
If you’ve ever been to Sling, you’ll know it is narrow and you can’t see anything around the corner into the backroom. Probably due to walking with a little too much attitude I turned the corner and promptly collided with a young American guy with a healthy amount of stubble. He introduced himself as Kurt and then introduced his friend Saan. I bought Kurt a drink, to replace the girly fruit cocktail one I had just sent flying as I rounded the corner and we began the boring process of idle chit chat.
It became quickly apparent that we had some stuff in common, not least of all blogging and an interest in the arts
Kurt:
Saan and I headed out to have a couple of drinks in celebration of the end of exams. Settling upon West End as our destination we headed out, walking from our university (QUT) across the Brisbane river (on a bridge, we aren’t Jesus’ cousins), through South Bank and eventually to West End.
Walking along we passed a small cocktail bar with a tiny entrance that is easy to miss, it had an interesting look so we headed in. After stumbling our way through what is possibly the biggest cocktail menu ever made we settled on a version of the martini, that sounded so good James Bond himself would order it (shaken, not stirred of course)and were soon sipping the deadly beverage from martini glasses.
It wasn’t long before this kid walks around the corner and sends my drink flying. Luckily, Saan’s shirt took the brunt of the liquid. He apologised and we introduced ourselves, his name was Dan and he seemed okay, though (despite what he would have you believe) he never offered to buy me a drink to replace the one he had just lost me.
A couple of drinks later and it turned out we had a creative streak in common, Saan was into poetry and literature, Dan into photography and I held a soft spot for music.
2 more drinks had passed when I suggested a blog with the theme “Diversity is the Mother of Invention” and the rest is history
Saan:
I was in a bar called Sling with Kurt and a few girls who we knew from Uni. We were chatting and had just got our second round of drinks when this kid (Dan) knocks Kurt’s water all over me. He apologised and gave Kurt some money to replace the drinks and sends him to the bar to get them himself.
As though not embarrassing himself enough already he promptly sets to work trying to impress the girls we were with by telling stories about him in places he has never been doing things he saw on the adventure channel. Once he had bored the girls into a coma-like state he started chatting to Kurt and myself and somehow we had enough in common to overcome our recent issues.
We all went to QUT and studied the same degree (Business, *yawns*) where Kurt and I already knew each other from. We also shared the interest of blogging, entrepreneurship and had our own artistic interests.
We came up with the idea of a collaborative blog containing our various interests and somehow I suggested the name “Mother of Diversity” which is where is all began
So that’s how it happened, the blog means different things to each of us and (as with our version of the above events) we have our own take on the blog. Reading our first ever blog will give you a feel for our individual takes on what the phrase “Diversity is the Mother of Invention” means to us.
Our blogging interests and styles are equally diverse, though we focus on the creative mediums of Music, Photography and Literature. Though we also throw our hats into the ring on a wide range of topics/issues in the featured section.
So we welcome you to our site, we feel at home here and hope that in time you will too.
